To simplify the necessary manipulations, the so-called batch photo processing is used. What it is, and how to use such capabilities in different applications, will now be discussed.

What does "batch photo processing" mean?

First, a little theory. What is Batch Photo Processing? In the simplest sense, this is a set of predefined standard actions of the same type that need to be applied not to one picture, but to tens or even hundreds.

Actually, this is where the name of the term itself comes from, since the selected set of actions is used for a batch of photographs.

What parameters can be changed?

Basically, any, even the most primitive program for batch processing of photos that supports the function of multiple file changes, allows you to configure one or more parameters, the values ​​of which will be applied immediately to all the images to be edited. Naturally, the capabilities of applications, depending on the complexity of the programs themselves, can differ quite significantly.

However, among the most basic parameters, we can conditionally single out several of the most commonly used ones:

  • resizing, color palette, brightness and saturation;
  • mass renaming;
  • editing with adding effects according to the template;
  • format conversion;
  • reducing file size, etc.

The list of parameters can be continued for quite a long time. But let's dwell on some of the applications with which batch photo processing is easiest.

Most popular programs

If we approach the choice of the appropriate software, conditionally such programs can be divided into several types. Most commonly used viewers (IrfanView, XnView), converters and converters (Image Tuner, AVS Image Converter, FastStone Image Resizer, XnConvert) and graphic editor(GIMP, Photoshop, Lightroom).

The simplest steps in Image Tuner

Now a little more detail about the actions performed. The simplest utility is Image Tuner. There are not so many changeable parameters and supported formats in it, nevertheless, it is worth adopting it for service.

The application works on the principle of one window. First, the necessary files are added on the left side of the screen, and the required settings are indicated on the right, after which the button to start the conversion process is simply pressed.

Using viewers and converters

Among these types of programs, IrfanView, XnView and XnConvert can be distinguished. For the first application after adding objects, the Batch Conversion mode is used. But here you can only set basic settings.

If you need to use additional parameters, you should use the menu for setting additional options (the Advanced button, by clicking on which you can call the Use advanced options function). The output format is set in the corresponding Output Format menu. The program is not very convenient, but it has support for more than 20 formats.

The XnView application is much better. Batch processing of photos in it is done almost at a professional level. The files for processing are selected first after activating the batch processing function in the tool menu. There are two tabs here. One contains the main parameters for changing images, the second contains actions for transformations, which, after selecting in the left window, must be added to the right side. In addition, you can immediately use the execution of XBS scripts, which, however, are incompatible with XnConvert (this application uses BAT). After setting all the parameters, the conversion process is activated, that's all.

In the XnConvert program, batch processing of photos uses the actions tab, where you can select transformations, conditionally divided into four groups: transforming images, working with adjusting colors and levels, setting filters and additional actions, which mostly include applying effects.

The required files are specified on the input tab, and the save options on the output tab. There is also an option to upload scripts and export to Flickr-account or Picasa, as well as packaging in FTP and sending via e-mail.

GIMP: Batch Photo Processing

First of all, it is worth remembering that the editor alone will not be enough. For it, you should immediately install a special add-on in the form of a BIMP plugin. Batch processing of photos in this application will be available only after installing the add-on.

The procedure is as follows. First, in the file menu, you need to select the plug-in launch line (Batch Image Manipulation), then add a folder with images or single files with the Add Images button. Next, the Add button, marked with a plus sign, is used to select to add actions. In the context menu, you can select what you need and configure the parameters for each operation. When all the settings are done, the destination folder for saving the modified photos is selected, and then the Apply button is pressed, activating the processing process. It may take a long time depending on the number of shots and the selected operations. When finished, the Close button is used to close the plugin.

Batch photos in Photoshop

Now a few words about such a powerful package like Adobe Photoshop. Batch processing of photos in this program can be done in several ways:

  • creating or using actions;
  • Batch operations;
  • using the script processor Image Processor.

In the first case, first, to create an action (action), you need to use a so-called test sample, based on the analysis of which the action will be saved in a set (Set). True, at this stage, the choice is limited exclusively by the capabilities of the application itself.

After that, for multiple use of the created set of actions, the file menu is used, where the Automate section is selected, and then proceeds to the Batch operations. Next, in the Play settings section, the required action from the set is selected, the source and final destination folder are set.

However, it is better to use a script processor. There are more possibilities here, and the operations of transforming images themselves look much simpler. The Scripts / Image Processor transition is selected in the file menu, and then the necessary settings are set. The advantage of this method is that you do not need to create actions like in the previous version. But the main disadvantage is that only three formats will be available for saving the results (TIFF, PSD and JPEG).

Practical use of the Adobe Lightroom suite

Finally, let's take a look at how to batch process photos in Lightroom. The bottom line is that you can use this function during export using the Library module and the command itself (File / Export menu).

In the settings, you can set the following parameters:

  • saving to hard disk, recording to optical media or sending by e-mail (Export To ...);
  • selection of the destination folder for saving (Export Location);
  • multiple renaming of objects according to the set mask (File Naming);
  • selection of the final format (File Settings);
  • resizing and resizing (Image Sizing);

Batch processing of photos in "Lightroom" is not limited to this only. In the Presets section, located in the sidebar on the left, you can select ready-made presets or add your own settings, after which they will be applied to all selected files.

Instead of a total

As for the choice of a program for processing photos in the right amount, the best results, for example, in terms of resizing speed, are demonstrated by XnView and Photoshop, slightly behind Lightroom. In terms of support for readable and writeable formats, XnView and XnConvert are the undisputed leaders. On the other hand, you can make finer or more advanced settings using Photoshop, and Lightroom has built-in templates. However, if you need to use the simplest actions, Image Tuner is perfect. The GIMP is simple to handle, but it requires a plugin. So the choice is up to the user.

It remains to add that not all programs that support batch photo processing have been considered here. The list is so huge that just listing all the available applications can take a lot of time. Nevertheless, everyone can conclude that in programs of the same type, all actions are very similar to each other. Windows user... When installing BatchBlitz, be very, very vigilant, as the installer will try to "push" the additional Babylon program and confuse you with the Registry Cleaner. Just dismiss all these extra "goodies" and get a clean image editor.

BatchBlitz is very comfortable to use: start work by opening a new Blitz-session, via "File -> New", find the necessary image at the top and add it to the main window. Then switch to the Actions tab to make changes such as resizing, renaming, converting to another format, auto-contrast, rotating and many more. After adding actions, you can double-click on each one for additional customization.

Often, faced with the same type of work, we would like to save our time and do everything in one fell swoop. Batch processing is an indispensable assistant in this matter.

Graphic files undergo many transformations: from elementary ones, performed even by novice users (changing the size, format, etc.) to more complex ones, performed by specialists-designers, programmers (adding filters, applying effects). Simple transformations can be done in standard image viewers, since many of them have the necessary functions built in for this. More complex processing is done in converters - programs for processing graphic images.

Below, in ascending order, methods of batch processing are described from simple to more complex, professional. The research results are summarized in comparative table 1. Test results in Diagram 1.

Image Tuner

The most simple, not complicated by settings and filters, program for basic image processing. The list of its capabilities is limited to changing shades, sizes, image orientation, adding a watermark. The program works in the "one window" mode: the files being processed are loaded into the left half. The right one contains the conversion parameters.

Thus, if you are satisfied with basic transformations that do not require preview, this program will meet your requirements. But you cannot add it to the list of the most convenient converters.

AVS Image Converter

AVS Image Converter is a converter program. It is one of the AVS4You suite of programs designed to work with images. Feature of this program are auxiliary utilities Software Navigator and Update Manager. By the way, this explains the large size of the program: 27 MB.
Pros:
ease of use. A very simple interface, with simplified functions or presets, which makes it easy to work with the program even for inexperienced users;
number of formats supported: 8 for writing, more than 20 for reading;

Minuses:

FastStone Photo Resizer

In terms of functionality, this program resembles IrfanView, but, unlike the latter, it provides the user with a more convenient and extended choice of parameters.
Pros:
image control. By specifying the “Output Format” and the “Output Folder”, you can save time on performing these functions for each image separately;
function "Search and Replace". With its help, the name of the files is corrected without completely changing the name.
Minuses:
basic set of transformations. The list of available transformations: adjusting the size, texture, perspective, adding a water image, a selection of frames;
lack of preview mode (window);
irrational use of the interface area. Most of the workspace is an area for file selection.

XnConvert program

The XnConvert program is one of the components of the well-known XnView image viewer. Created on the same base, the programs perform almost identical actions, but still have a number of differences, which will be discussed below.

XnConvert is a converter program for converting images only and does not include a viewer function. On the one hand, this is an advantage of the program, since it strictly performs its functions. On the other hand, you need to use another viewer to work.

The basic principles of the program are as simple as possible. Images to be processed are added by drag and drop or using buttons. Further, conversion options are selected from the list. The lists are at the top and are displayed as thumbnails, which presents some inconvenience to users. The fact is that this kind of sorting does not allow viewing information about the source files, as it could be when sorting in the form of a table. Therefore, sorting is more conditional than functional.

Now in more detail about the transformation functions. The list of transformations is located on the main tab "Actions" and is divided into 4 groups:
image: work aimed at transforming a file, or related to file properties;
correction: processing of color gamut and levels;
filters: blur the image, adjust the sharpness, change the focus;
miscellaneous: other functions.

Output tab. In this tab, you work with files that have passed the conversion: you specify the parameters for saving (name, save path, format). There are additional options for saving, they apply to formats such as GIF, PNG, JPG, etc.

Load script button. Used to export images for use on the Internet. Packing or sending via FTP or e-mail, uploading images processed to a Picasa- or Flickr account - these are the functions above the specified button.

And in conclusion, it should be noted that the program supports more than 500 formats for reading. True, some of them are more specific and require additional resources. In this case, either GhostScript or a CAD plugin must be installed.

A simplified version of XnConver. The ease of operation lies in the fact that this program provides only two tabs. The first is for the format and save options. The second contains a list of transformations. To select and apply a transformation, add the half of the window on the right to the list. There is a function "Saving a script". The settings window is located in the "Tools - Batch processing ..." menu.

Photoconverter program

The program was created in several editions: home (minimal), standard, professional. The professional edition allows you to use the functions of Adobe Photoshop, supports more than 400 graphic formats, functions from the command line. The standard version is simple and convenient step by step settings, supports only the most popular image formats (JPEG, TIFF, GIF, PNG, BMP).

The program interface is divided into two parts, so the first step of the transformation is to add an image to the right side of the window. The second step is the transformation itself, which takes place through the "add action" button. In the minimum version, in addition to the standard functions, there is a blur / sharpness effect, red-eye removal. The standard version allows adding a watermark. And the third and final step is preservation. At this stage, the format for saving is selected, in addition there is the option "Rename file by mask". Completion and saving is pressing the "Start" button.

I would like to note in this program a more logical arrangement of transformation functions than in those discussed above. But, nevertheless, there are certain shortcomings: for example, the functions of correcting levels and cropping are related to editing, and in the program they are located in the "Automatic" settings group. However, over time, with frequent use of the program, this does not cause any difficulties.

This program is one of the most popular among converters. Almost all the necessary tools for batch image conversion are built into this program. On this moment the current version is CS6, in the meantime we are considering the version CS5. File processing is performed using actions, Batch operation or Image Processor script.

The first way to process images

To process graphic images, you need to create a set (Set). For this it is better to take a test sample. In the future, this set will be applied to all selected files. The set is created through the Actions palette, by recording the required actions. At this stage, only Photoshop tools are available. In the future, the list can be adjusted by adding or removing certain actions. Through the "File - Automate - Batch ..." menu, go to the "Play" settings group, select the desired action, specify the source and folder for saving the processed files. This action leads to the massive use of the kit.

Second method of image processing

The second way of processing is more acceptable, since it does not require creating an action. The method is based on the use of the Image Processor script. Changing the format or size of the image occurs through the menu "File - Scripts - Image Processor ...". The rest of the settings can be done in the first way.

Processed images are saved in JPEG, PSD and TIFF formats.

Work Adobe programs Lightroom is based on bulk conversion of exported images or using the Library module. To work with images, the following settings are used, marked in the "File - Export ..." menu:
Export To - selection of image export. As options: HDD, e-mail or CD or DVD burning. Also, the Library module allows you to export images to the Internet: Facebook, Flickr, Adobe Revel and SmugMug;
Export Location - folder for saving images;
File naming - selection of file names by mask. The program has a large list of variables. Variables can also be taken from the image metadata;

Sometimes there is a need for mass, batch processing of graphic images. Change many images

The program supports many languages ​​including Russian. Easily and quickly, a photographer can easily apply an author's watermark to all photographs and drawings before posting them on the Internet. Getting a lot of pictures in the age of digital cameras is not a problem, it is much more difficult to sort out your photo archive later, because it can store hundreds and thousands of images with meaningless names. Therefore, you cannot do without renaming photos, and this is one of the most time-consuming operations for organizing a photo collection. Renaming a photo manually is long and tedious, it is better to call for help applications for batch processing of images, with the help of which the named task is solved almost instantly.

But this is only one side of the issue. Pictures, depending on their purpose, have to be subjected to one or another additional processing. For example, if you intend to publish a photo on the Internet, then, as a rule, you cannot do without reducing the size, and in some cases - converting to another format and adding watermarks to the images. In addition, it may be necessary to carry out photo corrections in order to improve them (color correction, adjust contrast and saturation, etc.), as well as in the decoration of photographs. Of course, all these operations can be performed manually, but if there are a lot of pictures, it will be a truly titanic work. You shouldn't waste your time so pointlessly, it is better to carry out such routine operations in batch mode.

There are many software solutions on the market equipped with functionality for batch processing of images. These are graphic editors (including Adobe Photoshop recognized by all professionals), and photo cataloguers (including the famous Adobe Lightroom and more modest products for the general user: Zoner Photo Studio, PicaJet, etc.), and various kinds of graphic viewers (IrfanView, XnView and etc.). However, simple routine operations for processing images are often more convenient to perform using specialized utilities for batch processing. Such utilities are very easy to use, compact, have an impressive conversion speed and are often free, and therefore useful to any user.

Renaming snapshots

The names assigned to images by the camera during shooting are completely uninformative - it is absolutely impossible to guess which picture is hidden, for example, under the name DSC02799.jpg. Therefore, when copying photos from a camera to a photo archive on the hard drive, they are usually renamed, giving descriptive names that "speak" about when and where the photo was taken, what event was displayed on it, etc. It is useful, for example, to indicate in the name of the picture the date (perhaps only the year and month) and the number of the frame - for example, 2011-09-05_0015.jpg or 2011-09_0015.jpg (15th frame taken on September 5, 2011 or in September 2011 ). It is also possible to add the name of a place or event to the name of the picture - the variant of the name of a specific photo from the group in this case may look like: Thailand_2011-09_0015.jpg.

As a rule, such renaming is carried out in batch mode. To rename a group of images, set the file name mask to general view... Typically, such a mask can use letters of the English alphabet, numbers, underscores and a number of special characters that conventionally denote the original file name, year and month of shooting, serial number, etc. (symbol designations may differ in different utilities).

For example, let's rename several photos with the utility FastStone Photo Resizer... Activate the tab Batch Rename, on the left side of the window, open the folder with the source files and add the images of interest to the list on the right side of the window. Please note that files on the left side of the window can be displayed as a list or as thumbnails, which is more convenient. After that, if necessary, you can open the next folder with the original images and re-select the photos for processing, etc. Then the file mask is entered in general form (in our case - Large_Patok_2011_07 _ ####). This will mean that the name of the place (Large_Patok) and the shooting date will appear in the name of each picture, and at the end there will be a sequence number of the frame. Now all that remains is to start the process by clicking on the Rename button (Fig. 1), and all the selected files will be renamed and saved in the original folder.

Renaming of images in other utilities that support this opportunity... However, in some solutions, more flexible schemes can be implemented, for example, in the program Rename master the type of names generated in batch mode is limited only by the user's imagination. There are no special difficulties in forming such names, although at first the utility's interface seems complicated, and the help leaves much to be desired. The principle of renaming files in Rename Master is step-by-step: the whole process is divided into many separate actions (delete characters at the beginning / end of a name, replace a number or text, add a certain set of characters to the beginning / end of a name, etc.). To perform a specific action, follow the tab Renaming Scripts activate the required script and correct its parameters in accordance with the task at hand, then carry out similar operations with respect to the next of the scripts of interest, etc. Let's see it in practice for replacing names in a series of snapshots, installed by the camera(that is, names like DSC_0064.jpg) to names like Dacha_winter_2013_0021.jpg (21st frame, taken at the dacha in winter 2013). First, we sequentially delete the first three characters of the name (action Remove characters) and replace the snapshot number in accordance with the number of images in the processed folder and the shooting sequence (Replace numbers; Fig. 2). Please note that the preview panel (located on the right side of the program window) immediately displays the result of connecting any script, which allows you to make sure that the selected parameters are correct or incorrect. After that, add the text at the beginning of the name Dacha_winter_2013(Fig. 3) and complete the renaming by clicking on the Rename button. As a result, the entire group of files will be renamed in a matter of seconds. By the way, the date (as well as other information that is available in the file properties or meta-tags, it is not necessary to manually specify it at all, since this program implements the ability to connect the corresponding variables inside scripts (Fig. 4).

Preparing images for online publication

Many users publish their photos on various kinds of Internet resources and exchange pictures with friends and colleagues by e-mail. However, the photographic material shot in modern cameras "weighs" a lot and it takes quite a long time to upload a large number of images in their original form to your online photo album, even with the current speed of the Internet connection. And there is no point in this. Therefore, images intended for publication and online exchange are usually pre-scaled down to a web standard. In addition, in some cases, before publishing, you have to resort to converting images to another format in accordance with the requirements of a particular resource. It will also be useful to add watermarks to the images when posting them on the Web. Performing all these operations manually for a long time - faster to get the result, using the toolkit for batch image processing.

For example, in the Fotosizer utility, to change the size of a group of images in batch mode, in the simplest case, you just need to drag the images into the main program window (one by one or in bulk), specify the processing parameters: size (we have chosen a preset profile for sending by e-mail) and a folder to save, and then start the process (Fig. 5).

When it comes to a large number of images, it is no more difficult and even faster to reduce the size of images using the Photo Magician utility. However, dragging and dropping will not work here in normal operation - you will have to manually specify the source folder and destination folder. Then the processing parameters are determined (it is easier to select a profile for posting on the Web or viewing on a portable device of interest) - Fig. 6 - and start the process. The utility will spend a minimum of time on processing the images and, in addition, carefully offer to send the images to the Internet at the end, for example, to the Facebook photo album.

A more visual option for reducing the size of images (thanks to displaying a thumbnail with an indication of the base size) is implemented in the PIXresizer program. At the same time, the batch processing technology is approximately the same as in other utilities of this plan: you need to specify the source folder and source folder, determine the desired photo size (Fig. 7), if necessary, change the format and start the conversion process.

It is also easy to prepare thumbnail copies of images for online in the ImBatch program. It is enough to drag the original photos into the utility window, select the operation in the list of tasks Resize and install right size in certain units. After that, the operation of saving images ( Save as), indicate the bin and start the processing (Fig. 8).

Similarly, other operations are performed, which sometimes also need to be performed before publishing images on network resources - converting and adding watermarks. With the conversion, everything is elementary, because here you just need to select the desired format and in some cases also adjust the conversion parameters. With watermarks (as a rule, this is the author's signature and / or his logo) is a little more complicated - unlike professional solutions for introducing watermarks in the utilities under consideration, you cannot create watermarks themselves, you can only insert their ready-made images on a transparent background. The possibilities for managing the display of such embedded watermarks are minimal here, the program boasts the greatest functionality in this regard. Correction and artistic processing of images

We do not always like the obtained images. The reasons may be different: due to excessive noise, insufficient sharpness, due to poorly selected shooting parameters (for example, incorrectly set white balance or exposure), insufficient or excessive lighting when shooting, etc. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to shoot again and take better pictures, so some of the low-quality photographs have to be corrected. In particular, suppress noise, increase contrast, correct color distortions, increase detail in dark or light areas, increase sharpness, etc. There is no doubt that in order to obtain professionally designed images, such operations are performed by means of solid graphic products (such as Adobe Photoshop), moreover, as a rule, an individual approach to each image is assumed. However, if desired, you can process a specific series of images with the same shooting defects in batch mode. In some cases, you can use the appropriate batch image processing tools to improve amateur shots. However, counting on a miracle with such a correction, of course, is not worth it - at best, you will only be able to slightly improve the image.

You can try connecting the very easy-to-use XnConvert program to the case, which provides functionality for correcting levels, flattening histogram, lightening / darkening an image, changing exposure, adjusting color balance, etc. To quickly improve a group of images in it, you need to drag the images to the tab Input data(you can open files directly on this tab) and add on the tab Actions an interesting set of image correction operations. The result of the impact of any of the added operations will be immediately displayed in the preview window (for the first image from the group), and by changing the parameters, you can try to achieve some improvement in the image (Fig. 10). After that, the output data is determined on the tab of the same name, that is, the output folder is set, and, if necessary, the file name in general form and the extension are indicated if it is supposed to simultaneously carry out batch renaming and conversion. When finished, all that remains is to click on the button Convert- converted photos will appear in the specified output folder.

The utilities discussed in this article can also be useful in the simplest artistic processing of images, for example, for adding frames, applying filters and effects. The most interesting in this regard is the aforementioned XnConvert utility. For example, let's try to use it to turn an ordinary modern photo into an old photo in the “retro” style. In our case, we managed to achieve such a metamorphosis by using the "sepia" and "retro" effects in the program in combination with the vignette effect to darken the edges of the picture (Fig. 11).

The capabilities of all other solutions in this plan are an order of magnitude more modest - the corresponding capabilities in them are often represented by just a few simple filters. And it can be quite difficult to select the parameters of the effects in these programs, primarily because of the inconvenient preview. But all the same, this toolkit should not be discounted. For example, let's create a frame with a shadow for the images using the ImBatch utility. The procedure will be as follows: first, enable the operation Rounding the edges, then add the effect Soft shadow and when finished, turn on another effect Inner shadow... The first of the drop shadow effects will add soft outer shadows to the border of the image, and the second will create a shadow inside the border (Figure 12).

Finally, we will conduct another experiment - we will try to turn an ordinary picture taken in the Northern Urals into a Martian landscape, which, as you know, is distinguished by a peculiar reddish-brown color of the surface, scorched by the rays of the red-orange sun. Let's use the Image Tuner utility to carry out a similar operation. Technically, there is nothing complicated in processing, the original images are dragged into the utility window, the folder for saving the images is set in it and the necessary settings are selected. Of course, determining the size and format for images is as easy as shelling pears, difficulties arise in the process of selecting the values ​​of the parameters of brightness, contrast and saturation, as well as colorization parameters, which is important for us from the perspective of the problem being solved. The fact is that the selection is carried out in the full sense of the word at random until the desired effect is achieved, and each time after changing one or another parameter, you have to click on the file to update the image in the preview window (Fig. 13). However, in the end, if desired, all the same, you can achieve an acceptable result. Upon completion of the selection of settings, the conversion process is started (button Process images).
