In case someone doesn't know, Simple Machines Forum - SMF for short - is, as the official website says, a free, professional-grade package that will allow you to organize your own online community in a few minutes. on this engine, you can see it here. I myself put my forum on it (by the way, go to FreeForum.biz).

It doesn't matter if a lot or a little spam appears on your forum. The important thing is that you are wasting your precious time on moderation. Setting up a plugin that will do all the work for you takes a few minutes, and it will save you a total of days and months, which will add up to the minutes you would spend erasing messages and deleting users.

I will notice that I tried to fight spammers on my own - I blocked access by IP and even by subnets. It really worked, weeded out a lot of garbage, but, nevertheless, once every one or two days, someone made their way. And quite a lot of time was spent on replenishing the database of banned IPs. I thought there must be a more convenient way, and it really was found!

1. Installing and configuring Stop Spammer

In two weeks of operation, this plugin blocked 2202 fake users. Each of them would leave at least one message. Spammers are not going to slow down and every day I would spend time cleaning up my forum.

Instead, every few days I go to the user management page and see something like this:

I turn to the section "Awaiting approval" (these are the found spammers who are deprived of the opportunity to leave messages until their accounts are approved by the administrator). I tick the box "Select all" and delete them with one click:

That's all, all spam accounts are sent into oblivion. Back to our list of users:

It can be seen that the list has noticeably thinned, but who are the rest? We select all and send them with one button for verification:

One "red" appeared, we immediately delete it. If you have free time, you can do others. If there is no time, then do nothing with new users - most of them will "blush" during subsequent checks. If you have time, you can go to their profiles and see - if there is a link in the signature - immediately banned, these are fake accounts of spammers who will never leave a single useful message.

I told you how to use this magic plugin, now I will tell you how to install it.

Download two files: language_full.zip (this is the language pack for translating the plugin) and StopSpammer_v2_3_9.zip (the number may be different, since the versions are updated). Unpack the contents of the StopSpammer_v2_3_9.zip archive into some folder. Unpack the language_full.zip archive into the same folder, agree to replace the files. Now zip our folder.

In the admin panel, proceed to installing packages. Opposite the "Download Package" label there is a button for selecting a file on your computer. Select our new archive (where we replaced the language file), upload it to the forum and activate the package.

Additional configuration of the plugin takes place in the admin panel: go to

You can leave the default values there. There is also a field called "Your API Key". Without this key, you will not be able to report new spammers (but the plugin will work and filter known spammers). If you want to get your own API key, go to www.stopforumspam.com to register, and then enter the key here. If you have not received the key yet, leave the field blank. Then the default key will be used.

Google also has similar algorithms - ignoring links in comments, etc. But the law is not written to suckers ... Therefore, we, the owners of forums, have to reckon with the facts that “cool SEO-optimizers” order a “run” of their shitty things for a thousand rubles.

Problems of choosing a conference for Joomla

Before deciding to experiment with installing and integrating the above-mentioned engine, I tried several conference components in operation. The best of them, in my opinion, was Kunena. So you can try this component and decide for yourself if it is right for you.

If you decide to try Simple Machines Forum, you should take into account that the latest version 1.1.11 has an alternative in the form of beta version 2.0. The beta functionality is much higher than the classic version, but the very fact that it is still a beta version speaks of its incomplete stability. Personally, I did not risk it and installed version 1.1.9 (1.1.11 had not yet been released at that time) and it is on her example that I will talk about the integration of this forum with Joomla 1.5.

Now about the JFusion component for Joomla. This component provides universal user integration across all applications by expanding the user base that does not use kernel hacks. JFusion will allow you to integrate site and forum users. Currently, free support is provided for the following applications: vBulletin, phpBB3, MyBB, SMF, Magento, Moodle, gallery2 and dokuwiki.

In addition, JFusion provides several useful modules, for example, the module for recent posts in the conference, inserted into the site template, as well as an internal search plugin. Synchronization of user groups is also now available, thanks to which you can link groups between all the applications you use.

This component is certainly good and multifunctional, one might say just a godsend. And where can you download this miracle? Yes, actually, on the developer's website. The latest current version is currently JFusion 1.7.8 RC. Well, we have Joomla installed, files with localization packages (Russian) for SMF and JFusion have been downloaded, it's time to start installing the conference engine and setting up the integration of their mutual work.

Installing Simple Machines Forum

Let's start by installing the forum engine. Its latest versions can be downloaded, and the Russian language pack, both in utf-8 and 1251 encoding, can be downloaded.

We will install SMF in a separate folder on the site. Let's say that the site on Jumla opens at http://dfdf.ru/, then the forum should open at http://dfdf.ru/forum/. To do this, you need to connect to the server via FTP via FileZilla and create in the main directory (where we have all the files and folders created after the Joomla installation), a new folder "forum", into which we will install the conference engine.

To create a new folder in FileZilla, just right-click in the right window of the program, where files and directories on the remote host are displayed, and then select "Create Directory" from the drop-down menu. So, the folder has been created, now you need to copy the installation files of our forum into it using the same Filezila.

These files must first be obtained from the smf_1-1-9_install.zip archive, which you downloaded from the link given above. Next, in the ftp client, in the left window, open the smf_1-1-9_install directory with the Simple Machines Forum engine files, and in the right window, open the folder we created in the Joomla directory.

Select, while holding Shift on the keyboard, all the files in the left folder (of the conference engine) and click on any of them with the right mouse button. From the drop-down menu, select the "Upload to server" item. We are waiting for the end of the download and proceed to the next step.

Immediately upload the forum russification files to the server. Previously, we downloaded the Russian language pack for the version we need and the text we need from this page. In my case, this is smf_1-1-10_russian-utf8.zip. You need to unpack it and copy the Themes folder in it to the root of our SMF engine, where there is already a folder with the same name. In the process of copying, the necessary files of the Russian translation will be added to various subfolders of the Themes folder (more than 150 pieces).

Basic settings of the forum, set during its installation

Go to the browser and enter www.proekt.ru/forum in the address bar, where www.proekt.ru means the address of your site. As a result, the first step of installing the SMF engine should begin, in which you must first enter the name of your conference in the "Forum name" field. To enable the Russian language in the installation wizard, select it in the upper right corner of the window. I will show the setting of the parameters in the selected language.

Forum URL (address or another URL of the SMF forum) - in principle, it will be entered automatically, well, if not, then enter http://proekt.ru/forum
Gzip Output(Gzip compression), Database Sessions (sessions in the Database), UTF-8 Character Set (use UTF-8 encoding) - check the boxes everywhere
Allow Stat Collection(allow collecting statistics) - here you can choose to your liking whether or not to check the box

Database settings for Simple Machines Forum

MySQL server name(the address of the server where the MySQL database is located) - in principle, it is standard, in 90 percent of cases it is localhost. If you don't know, check with your hosting)
MySQL username(database username) - enter the username to connect to the Database. Because I wanted to use the same database to install SMF as for Joomla, so I accordingly entered in this paragraph the username that I created when installing the site engine.
MySQL password(password for accessing the database) - I think it's clear here. In my case, the password to the database conference is the same as when installing Joomla
MySQL database name(database name) - enter the name you want to use. I entered the same database name here as used for Joomla. If database is not present, the forum installer will try to create it. But some free hosting services do not allow creating more than 1 base, so enter the name of an existing one.
MySQL table prefix(table prefix) - don't change anything here.

Click "Proceed". The next step of the installation is to create a forum administrator account.

We come up with a username and password to enter the SMF admin panel, enter our e-mail and once again specify the password for the database. Click Finish. In the next window, put a tick and click on the inscription "your newly installed forum" in order to get to the Simple Machines Forum that we have just installed. After the installation is complete, be sure to delete the install.php and install_1-1.sql files, if they were not removed automatically.

As we can see, in our case, the forum interface will be in English, but if we had chosen Russian at the first stage of the installation, then the SMF would have opened immediately in Russian.
