Motorola smartphones from Lenovo at New Year's Eve - Sale: Moto Z, Moto Z Play, Photography Camera, Phone Projector Module, Mobile Stereo. Modular mobile phone "Motorola" with a projector: review, reviews ⇡ Appearance, ergonomics and software

Yes, Motorola no longer plays a decisive role in the market - we will probably never wait for the new RAZR. But do something faceless? Maybe high quality, but common? This is not about Moto - Lenovo clearly needs the brand to take risks. The new Z-series smartphones - like last year's Z, Z Play and Z Force - have received an unusual feature, as if inherited by engineers from Google, under whose wing Motorola huddled for several years. It's about a modular design, albeit in a much less radical implementation than in Google Ara.

An accessory with various properties can be attached to the back panel of any Z-line smartphone: a logical additional battery, a speaker, a projector or a camera with optical zoom. The column, by the way, was developed jointly with JBL, and to create the photomodule they attracted no less Hasselblad - well, or at least used the big name of the Swedish company.

We tested the "basic" Moto Z model, which stands in the middle between the less powerful, but designed for a long time without recharging Z Play and similar technical specifications, but equipped with an unbreakable Z Force display. In addition to modularity, I immediately want to draw your attention to a few more distinctive features of Moto Z: the AMOLED screen, which is still rare for smartphones not under the Samsung brand, and an ultra-thin (just over five millimeters) body stuffed with microphones - thanks to them, the communication quality should improve. And, finally, a hotly fashionable innovation - the absence of a mini-jack for headphones.

Appearance, ergonomics and software

We are accustomed to adjusting the external world for ourselves - at least in small things, surround ourselves with "our", individual things. Recently, smartphones have become one of the central objects in our life - small, poorly distinguishable from each other pieces of metal / plastic with a screen. You can express yourself through them only with the help of design protective covers... In the days of phones with removable batteries and thus replaceable back covers, some companies offered variations in this area. Motorola still employs people who remember those days very well - and in the new family, the concept of a removable back cover is back. The battery, however, is not removable, but that very modularity came to the rescue.

Moto Z looks a little intimidating out of the box: with a protruding camera "Adam's apple", a brand of glossy surface and sparkling contacts for plugging in replaceable modules. The back cover lies separately - it slightly covers the "shame" and returns the design to the smartphone that is more familiar to the modern look. By default, this is a "cloth" (actually plastic) cover in the manner of the Moto X Force. For 1,990 rubles, you can buy something else - there are plastic of different colors, under the skin and under the tree. The smartphone itself comes in three variations - black, white-silver and white-gold (the back magnetic panel is painted with gold or silver). You can imagine the scope for combinatorics.

The replaceable modules, like the covers, are magnetically attached to the back - in one motion and very securely. Implemented this is really great. And in general, in terms of thoughtfulness and quality of performance, Moto Z first of all suggests an iPhone. Moreover, the absence of a 3.5 mm jack is striking. As a result, we find a USB Type-C to mini-jack adapter in the kit. But the cable "USB Type-C - USB Type-A"Not in the box, for some reason the wire to the complete charger is soldered tightly. If you want to connect your smartphone to your computer, buy the cable separately. An inexplicable decision, to be honest.

But in the box there is a translucent bumper - it seems that the complete set was invented using a random number generator.

However, the surprises do not end there, Moto Z is a truly unusual gadget. Under the screen we see a square area - here, as you might guess, there is a built-in fingerprint scanner, as well as the Home key ... But no, the last statement is incorrect - this is only Fingerprint's scanner. And the "Home" button is virtual here, located on the screen. Why? Why?! Apparently because they could. But I lied a little - in fact, with this key, touch-sensitive by the way, with a vibration response (again iPhone?), You can turn off and turn on the display in one motion.

The scanner, by the way, is a classic, capacitive one, it works very quickly and stably - if you don't damage or get your finger dirty. Everything is at a standard high level for a modern flagship smartphone. Using the scanner, you can only unlock the device or make (in the future) purchases via Android Pay.

On the sides of the scanner, and this is most noticeable in the light version of the Moto Z, there are two microphones. There are four of them in total: one more is located on the upper edge and on the back panel (bottom). They help provide superior noise cancellation so you can be heard even in strong winds or on the subway - proven. I also draw your attention to the flash for front camera above the display - this, however, was on the last generation of older Moto.

On top of that, the Moto Z is the thinnest flagship smartphone to date at 5.19 millimeters. Without taking into account the protruding camera, it is true - there is much more with it, but still nothing to worry about. In addition, for a gadget with a 5.5-inch display, it is very light - only 136 grams. Lovers of glass, metal and "pleasantly heavy hand", God forgive me, devices may seem lightweight - but I liked it. The device breaks the template slightly - at first glance it seems gigantic, especially after the Sony Xperia X Compact, which I used directly before Moto Z. But you instantly get used to it. Although it is, of course, impossible to use it with one hand - the screen is too big.

Add to all of the above an unusually organized camera module, where both the lens and the dual-LED flash are inscribed in one round block, and we get the most unusual looking flagship smartphone of 2016. Slightly pretentious, yes, but there were no ridiculous decisions or frills - great work, Motorola (and Lenovo)!

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the prospect of updating to Android 7.0 Nougat. In fact, there is no shell - we are dealing with a "clean" operating room Google system, flavored with just a handful of Moto's proprietary utilities that add a few tricks to gesture or voice control. For example, you can turn on the flashlight with a double chopping motion, and the screen turns on itself if you lift the smartphone from the table - nice little things. And no littering operating system unnecessary applications.

Replaceable modules

I managed to try two plug-in modules for Moto Z - JBL column and Hasselblad PV module. First of all, attention is drawn to the big names of partner companies. No one admits (at least in the foreseeable future) how great the contribution of Harman or the famous Swedes to the development of these things is, recalls the experience of Leica and Huawei in creating mobile cameras: there is every reason to believe that a well-deserved company participates only with its name and authority. However, these are only assumptions.

And the modules themselves turned out to be very interesting. First of all, attention is drawn to the ease of use. They are attached to the case instantly and very reliably - the magnetic system is invented and implemented perfectly. To remove them, you just need to grab the groove and apply minimal force. No switches, additional blocking buttons - an extremely intuitive and simple system.

There is no need to download and install additional software - a single pre-installed Moto Mods application is used, which independently recognizes the module connected to this moment, and rebuilds the system to use it. An additional battery icon appears in the status bar if it comes about the column, the camera interface changes, if we connect the Hasselblad module, the smartphone is perfectly ready for this.

Externally, the Moto Z, of course, does not change in better side from the thinnest flagship smartphone to the thickest and most bulky. But also quite within reason.

MotoJBLSoundboost. One of the most logical modules, providing a smartphone with a powerful enough sound so that it would not be ashamed to be the center of an impromptu party. However, this is about the level of JBL Clip, if you look for analogs in external mobile speakers of the same brand. The miniature Soundboost will not give power and detail even the level of JBL Charge - but the thing is quite convenient and compact.

Hasselblad True Zoom transforms Moto Z (as well as Moto Z Play) into heir to glory (if I may use that word here) Samsung Galaxy Zoom and Samsung Galaxy Camera. Outwardly, the new creation of Motorola / Lenovo really looks like them: a huge touchscreen display on one side and a digital camera on the other - with a perforated protrusion for gripping with the right hand, a very protruding lens even when turned off, an impressive flash and even an autofocus illumination lamp. Separately, the build-up in the lower part of the lens rim is amusing - an obvious stylization under the button for releasing the lens from the mount. The main thing that the Hasselblad module gives to the smartphone user is 10x optical zoom.

The characteristics of the camera are quite common for a modern compact. A matrix with dimensions 1 / 2.3 '' with a resolution of 12 megapixels and optics with focal lengths of 4.5-45 mm (35-mm equivalent - 25-250 mm) are used. In addition to the optical zoom, there is also a 4x digital zoom - the usual crop, which reduces the image resolution. There is no built-in battery in Hasselblad True Zoom - it will consume the resources of the smartphone.

The saddest thing about this module is the optical aperture: f / 3.5-6.5. Despite the fact that the original Moto Z camera has an aperture of f / 1.8 at a wide angle - even taking into account the use of a smaller sensor (1/3 '') at the same resolution, the image quality is better - due to the significantly lower ISO, the noise is not so annoy. But the optical stabilizer is effective - even at the maximum zoom, more or less decent, blur-free pictures are obtained.

Autofocus is not very well implemented - it is a conventional contrast system that works very slowly and from time to time incorrectly. The minimum focusing distance at a wide angle is 5 cm.

The camera interface is also frustrating. This is Hasselblad! I would like at least minimal control over the process - but there is only an automatic mode and several plot modes to choose from. But you can record RAW - but the icon for working with an uncompressed image format repeats the usual one; strange negligence. By the way, Leica-Huawei is reminded not only of its extensive branding, but also an additional monochrome shooting mode.

What pleased me was the speed of work. The module has its own power button, it activates the camera application, and instantly - the "trunk" of the lens extends in less than a second. There is also a shutter button with a zoom control lever, it is quite convenient to work with the camera.

Examples of shooting with the Hasseblad True Zoom module

The quality of the images is not impressive - for the better, in comparison with the camera of the smartphone itself, the dynamic range differs primarily, but in terms of color rendition and work in the dark, I liked the built-in Moto Z camera more. But, again, a Hasselblad True Zoom user gets an offer that is virtually unique for a smartphone - an optical zoom.

By the way, you cannot shoot 4K video using the module - only Full HD. And if you remove it and simply shoot it on a smartphone, then no problem. Smells a little phantasmagoria.

The price of the module is, however, 19,990 rubles - you can also think about buying a full-fledged camera with a large sensor and built-in Wi-Fi in order to transfer files to a smartphone and not lose efficiency.

The most logical module available today is an additional Incipio offGRID battery at a price of 3,990 rubles - it is really useful and much more convenient to use than a power bank. Lenovo is promising to greatly expand its plug-in fleet - and it will be very interesting to see what else you can think of in this particular area.

Recently, smartphone manufacturers have gone into fashion for modular devices. Almost everyone has tried, but only Motorola has received really interesting modular phones. We will tell you about their famous Moto Mods in this article: what they are, what they are and what they can do.

Complete list of all Moto Mods

Here are all modules available for today, both from Motorola itself and from third-party manufacturers. Everyone will be able to choose according to their taste and functionality.

Column JBL SoundBoost

Make your smartphone music louder with JBL SoundBoost. This is a speaker that costs about $ 80 and has two 27mm speakers, each rated at 6W. This module can be used as a speaker for playing music or for holding conferences. Apart from that, this Mod has its own extra 1000mAh battery.

Moto Insta-Share Projector

Online movies and videos are fun, but not when your phone has a small screen and a lot of viewers. For such cases, there is a Moto Mod oInsta-Share projector for $ 3,000. It projects what is happening on the screen of your smartphone (Moto Z) onto the wall in good quality... You can project a picture with a diagonal of up to 70 inches. And the built-in stand will help you customize the position of the image on the wall as you like. The projector also has its own 1100mAh battery.

Hasselblad True Zoom Camera

Have you ordered a 10x zoom on a smartphone? This became possible with the Motorola Hasselblad True Zoom module (price $ 300). This Moto Mod turns your phone's regular camera into a great photography tool. It features a 10x optical zoom, xenon flash and physical buttons for zoom and shutter release. This module turns your phone into an almost professional camera.

Powerbank Mophie Juice Pack

The additional rechargeable battery in the Mophie Juice Pack module has a capacity of 3150 mAh. This built-in power bank can significantly extend the operating time of your phone, because its capacity is commensurate with the capacity of the phone's own battery. The cost of this Moto Mod is $ 80.

Powerbank Kate Spade Power Pack

The $ 80 Kate Spade New York Power Pack is a Mod external battery with a capacity of 2220 mAh. Like the Mophie Juice Power Pack, it charges along with the smartphone from the stock charger. In addition, there is a brand logo and striped coloring on the back.

Powerbank Incipio Offgrid Power Pack

And another battery from Incipio. This is an extra battery that you can use with Moto Z to increase battery power and smartphone life. The Incipio Offgrid Power Pack includes an additional 2220mAh battery. It supports both Qi wireless charging and PMA. The cost of this mod is approximately $ 80.

Powerbank TUMI Wireless Charging

Here is another battery from the TUMI brand. Its price is $ 80, and the main feature is wireless charging. The battery capacity is 2220 mAh. It supports Qi wireless charging, so you can use it to charge both your phone and the power bank at the same time. With a USB cable connected, the TUMI Wireless Charging Power Pack also charges like a smartphone.

Dock in car Incipio Vehicle Dock

it mobile device doesn't just charge compatible Motorola phones, it has a dedicated car mount. As soon as you turn on your smartphone, the dock will launch Android Auto so you can instantly access your contacts, music and maps without distraction from your driving experience. The Incipio Vehicle Dock sells for $ 65 and also offers 15W fast charging in your vehicle.

Column JBL SoundBoost 2

The next modification of the JBL SoundBoost 2 Moto Mod is a speaker that attaches to the back of phones from the Moto Z series. A new version Available in vibrant blues, blacks and reds. SoundBoost 2 is played using two 3W speakers, and a 1000mAh battery allows you to play music for 10 hours without the need for recharging. This mod also has splash protection.

Stylish Moto Style Shell

Style Shells - Stylish shells with a thickness of only 3.25 mm. They almost do not change the thickness of the smartphone, but they add zest to its appearance. Also, due to their thickness, they do not interfere with the Qi and PMA wireless chargers. Style Shells are available in several colors.

Powerbank Moto TurboPower Pack

Motorola's fast charging technology is called TurboPower. As you might have guessed, this Moto Mod is named after her. It has a built-in 3490mAh battery that charges Moto Z phones with 15W fast charging. This mod adds 6.58mm to the thickness of the phone, but it doesn't have to be carried around all day. In just 20 minutes, he will be able to charge the smartphone from 0% to about 50%, then you can simply remove it.

Moto Gamepad

A real godsend for gamers: The Motorola Gamepad Mod allows Motorola smartphones to become a gaming platform. It offers two joysticks on the left and right, as well as 4 additional keys for complete control over the gameplay. In addition, the Moto Gamepad has its own 1035mAh battery, which will help the phone last longer.

Panoramic Moto 360 Camera

The newest Moto Mod introduced with. It is a $ 300 360-degree panoramic camera that mounts on back part housing. The camera offers two 13-megapixel sensors and 4-channel video recording. There is support for 3D audio using the microphones of the phone and the camera itself. Photos and videos are written to a microSD card, but can be transferred to a smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There is support for synchronization with Google Photo.

Motorola Moto Z Play is a weighty 5.5-inch phablet with a distinctive design that can be diversified with replaceable covers and modules.

The phone looks really unusual thanks to the smoothed edges. Its upper and lower ends were made convex, and closer to the edges they were sharply rounded. In addition, we note the fingerprint scanner - it is very small. In addition, at first you might think that the scanner is combined with the Home button, but this is just a sensor. All phone control keys are touch sensitive and are located at the bottom of the screen. Above the display is the moto inscription with an earpiece under it, a front camera peephole and a flash around the edges.

The rear panel of the Motorola Moto Z Play looks even more interesting. In our case, the smartphone had a nylon cover in the manner, but not as rough and with a more complex pattern. Curiously, the cover can be easily removed - it is held not by latches, but by one magnet. Separately, we note that during the tests, the panel was held securely. Under the cover, you will see the Moto Z Play "naked", with a slippery glass surface and a heavily bulging lens. The entire glass surface is covered with concentric circles, which diverge in waves from the camera of the device. There is a docking station at the bottom of the back panel, to which you can attach various Moto Mods or a removable cover. Other unusual details include slightly convex side ends, a USB-C connector and very small power and volume keys.

The dimensions of a smartphone with a nylon cover are 156.4 × 76.4 × 9.2 mm, and it weighs 187 grams. Without a cover, the device is a little lighter and thinner, but in this case the lens sticks out from the body. In comparison, 5.5-inch smartphones are both lighter and thinner. In terms of weight, the phone is comparable to a 6-inch one.

Despite the removable lid, the Moto Z Play is non-separable. The smartphone has splash and drip resistance, but don't confuse this with IP standards. You cannot bathe your phone, but it is unlikely to die from rain or spilled coffee. The build quality is excellent, but its own glass back is easily scratched.

The Motorola Moto Z Play is available in two colors - black and white.

Screen - 4.4

Motorola Moto Z Play got a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD-resolution. Despite not the highest brightness, we can still call the display high quality.

The phone screen received Full HD-resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels). The image looks sharp on it, the pixel density is 401 per inch (like y). The screen uses a matrix Super AMOLED, which provides a natural black color. In addition, we note the presence protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 and a fairly effective oleophobic coating. The screen collects almost no fingerprints and is easy to clean from them.

The measured range of display brightness is not the widest - from 6 to 363 cd / m2. In the dark, the screen almost does not blind the eye, but on a sunny day it is difficult to read information from it. The smartphone has an adaptive brightness function, but it is slow, responding only to strong changes in lighting conditions. The viewing angles were wide, but slightly at the same than the average for this type displays. Moreover, under very high angle(about 170 degrees), the image becomes greenish. It's not that scary, we noticed the same effect even in the flagship. But the screen has excellent color reproduction, besides, it is one of the first with a very wide color gamut - 100% from sRGB and 99% from Adobe RGB! However, measurements with a colorimeter show a very low color error. Nevertheless, the screen is hardly the best. It lacks gimmicks like gloved mode or picture settings. V in this case there are only two color modes - "normal" and "vivid" with rich hues.

Cameras - 4.7

The Motorola Moto Z Play smartphone has received advanced cameras at 16 and 5 megapixels. They will be able to replace on the go or take a selfie, although they are inferior to top solutions.

In our opinion, in terms of the level of shooting, the main photomodule is comparable to - above average, but does not reach the flagship solutions. The Moto Z Play uses a relatively large 1 / 2.4 "OmniVision OV16860 sensor. Individual pixels are also rather large - 1.3 microns, which increases the camera's light sensitivity. As a rule, they are smaller in phones, but in the top-end one is larger, 1.55 microns. The camera uses a dual focusing system - laser and phase. Note the already typical for today aperture width of F2.0 and the absence of an optical stabilization system.

Typically, Motorola phone cameras get an atypical interface, and the Moto Z Play is no exception. Basic settings pop up by "swipe" from left to right, which is already unusual. But the most interesting thing is the choice of the type of shutter. You can choose the option with a separate shutter button or shoot "tap" on the screen. In the second case, you will see a separate circle with which you can adjust focus and exposure. We saw the same thing in another smartphone from the company,. The choice of shooting modes is small, from the unusual there is only "Auto HDR" and "Professional". In the latter case, the following set of parameters is available:

  • focusing (macro to infinity)
  • white balance (auto, or four different options)
  • shutter speed (1/6000 to 1/6 second)
  • ISO (100 to 3200)
  • exposure (from −2 to 2).

As you can see, the customization options are not that wide and inferior to the same.

As for the quality of shooting, the camera does its job well. Dual focusing works clearly and quickly, but the speed is inferior to the first "laser". In addition, during the tests, the phone stubbornly refused to shoot macro, as if it did not understand what they wanted from it. But the result is still worth the trouble - the pictures are of high quality. The level of detail in the frames is quite high, but the clarity drops off at the edges of the frame. However, this is a common problem with high pixel count cameras.

The HDR mode copes well with different lighting conditions, the photos look quite natural. In the dark, the camera starts to "make noise", but within reason. True, she sometimes lies with color rendition: some colors may turn out to be richer or paler than they really are. Shooting panoramas is also not her strong point. Despite the long processing of the photo, the frames are glued together at random. In addition, the Moto Z Play clearly saves on pixels by shooting panoramas in low resolution.

The 5MP front camera has flash, HDR shooting and a beautifying filter. Otherwise, it is quite typical for its resolution. The front camera copes well with taking selfies on the street and indoors. The frames are slightly lacking in dynamic range, so it's better to shoot selfies with HDR. Also note that the front camera can shoot video up to Full HD resolution.

Working with text - 4.0

The phone uses a standard and fairly comfortable keyboard from Google. There is Swype (continuous input) and a set of numbers by pressing the keys of the upper row. Also note the quick switch between languages using a separate button. Otherwise, everything is typical. You can add drawing borders between the keys and change the keyboard theme, or rather, its colors. If this keyboard does not suit you, you can download any other one.

Internet - 3.0

The Moto Z Play comes with a browser preinstalled Google chrome... The performance of the smartphone is sufficient for a smooth multi-tab experience. Chrome is not very functional, but it has an option to sync history and bookmarks with desktop version browser. In addition, you can mark the "Incognito" mode and fit the size of the text by double-clicking on the pre-selected size.

Communications - 5.0

Moto Z Play has a fairly wide range of communications:

  • dual band Wi-Fi a / b / g / n
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP profile
  • LTE support
  • A-GPS
  • NFC chip.

Only IrDA and FM radio are missing. A USB type C connector is used for charging and connecting to a computer. The only pity is that the bundle does not include a separate cable for it. It is worth noting the card tray - it is double-sided. On the one hand, there are two slots for nanoSIM, and on the other, for a memory card. Thus, one tray simultaneously holds all three cards, without having to choose between them. We hope that manufacturers will pick up this useful feature.

Multimedia - 4.2

Moto Z Play supports the most common audio and video formats and produces pretty high quality sound.

Like most phones, the Moto Z Play didn’t play audio tracks in AC-3, but it did FLAC. When it comes to video, the phone is not friendly with the AVC codec regardless of the video format - be it MOV, MKV or AVI. During the tests, the smartphone refused to play videos with this codec.

The Moto Z Play has a fairly high sound quality in. According to the test results, it has a fairly uniform frequency response, without blockages at low frequencies, with a wide dynamic range (87.4 dB) and a good noise level - 87.5 dB. Smartphone comes preinstalled with typical Google audio player Play Music with not the simplest interface. True, this is not even a player, but a music service with its own subscription. It's good that even in free version you are given access to an equalizer with sound tuning by frequency.

Initially, there is no video player on the phone. Videos play directly from the Gallery app. In it, they can be cut, flipped or removed. But sometimes the app doesn't even want to rewind the video to a certain point, always playing it from the beginning.

Battery - 4.8

According to the test results, the autonomy of Motorola Moto Z Play can be called very high. The device was enough for us for one and a half to two days of work, but a very active user will still land the phone in a day.

What is the secret to the success of the Moto Z Play battery? This is a relatively high battery capacity (3510 mAh), an economical screen type and an energy efficient filling.

So, the phone withstood 15.5 hours of video marathon (HD video at maximum brightness plus Airplane mode). In terms of this parameter, it even surpassed the Samsung Galaxy S7. True, the point is not the highest pixel density and display brightness. In case of constant low load (player mode in headphones) Moto Z Play also performed well - 133 hours, outrunning the long-liver and the big one. In addition, the battery allows you to shoot for a long time on the phone - shooting a 10-minute video in 4K "ate" only 5% of the charge. Even in games, the smartphone keeps excellently - 5-6% for half an hour of racing in Asphalt Extreme. The numbers are great, but miracles don't happen in daily use. The device is still enough for one and a half to two days of work. Although the more economical owners of the phone will have enough for a longer period.

The Moto Z Play comes with a pretty powerful 3A TurboPower charger. It charges the device in about an hour and forty-five minutes, which is relatively fast.

Performance - 3.8

Motorola Moto Z Play has a modern mid-range chipset. It is sufficient for smooth operation and most games.

The smartphone uses an eight-core Qualcomm processor MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 (all cores up to 2.0GHz) with 3GB random access memory and graphics Adreno 506. Despite average level chipset, it is quietly enough for both the smooth operation of the interface and modern toys. We did not notice any problems with the speed of work, except that in the most difficult games we will have to switch to medium graphics settings. In operation, the smartphone hardly heats up. For half an hour of racing in "Asphalt" the body warmed up to 35.6 degrees, which is not felt at all. According to this parameter, it turned out to be even better than the cool one. As for synthetic tests, the phone showed the following results in them:

  • GeekBench 4 - 2459 points (already the old one got less)
  • AnTuTu 7 - 62057 (half as low as that)
  • 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited - 13794 (a couple thousand more than the budget).

Memory - 4.5

The amount of permanent memory Moto Z Play is 32 GB, of which 23.8 GB is available to the user. For most, this will be enough, but music lovers and fans of 4K video will have to arm themselves with a memory card. The smartphone supports microSD cards up to 2 TB.

Peculiarities

Motorola Moto Z Play runs under the control of "pure", but with some proprietary chips and capabilities. Soon, the manufacturer promises an update to.

The smartphone stands out for its high autonomy and AMOLED display. But the most important thing in it is the presence of removable covers and Moto Mods. Using them, a smartphone can be turned into an advanced camera, a projector, or simply add an additional battery. Another nice feature is the double-sided tray with three card slots so you don't have to choose between additional communication or memory.

The phone has a lot of proprietary chips for control. For example, there is an active screen function - it turns on to unlock when you take the device out of your pocket or pull your hand towards it. There are other features typical for Motorola: launching the camera by rotating the phone around its axis, turning on the flashlight with a chopping motion of the hand, and a number of others. Also note the fingerprint scanner - it seems small, but it works quickly and the first time. In addition, the scanner is functional: with a touch, you can activate or lock the screen. For reference, it can only remember up to five fingerprints.

The Moto Z is radically different from anything we've seen before from this manufacturer. The smartphone is very thin at only 5.2 mm (for comparison, the iPhone 7 has a 7.3 mm body). On the front there is an abundance of sensors and microphones, on the back there is a round camera module in the form of a Moto 360 watch display. The device looks more like a futuristic concept. Such a gadget is definitely not to be confused with others.

The abundance of sensors is, of course, technologically advanced, but frankly ugly. And the camera protrudes by as much as 3 mm. In a word, out of habit, the appearance of a smartphone causes irritation and dislike. But, as they say, you get used to everything. So after a week you stop noticing all these roughness.

The Moto Z body is made of metal, with a glass insert on the back. The device is assembled with high quality. However, Motorola was famous for its solid build quality. There will be three colors on sale: silver, gold and black. The latter, by the way, is the most advantageous option: all these numerous sensors and holes are not so noticeable on it. But we have, as you can see, golden.

The back of the Moto Z looks cool, but the bezel will take some getting used to. It is better to buy the black version: the numerous sensors and microphone holes are not so noticeable on it.

Let us emphasize right away that Moto Z is not suitable for work "naked". The fact is that the body is thin, the edges are sharp, and the dimensions are rather big - it's inconvenient to hold it in your hand, the device tries to slip out. Replaceable covers are quite a solution.

The manufacturer has provided panels from different materials that are attached to the smartphone with magnets. Putting on the lid, the Moto Z experience changes dramatically. It is comfortable to hold, fingers do not slip, the camera does not stick out. At the same time, the smartphone remains beautiful and thin.

On sale you can find panels made of plastic, wood, fabric and leather. The cloth one comes with a smartphone, and the new one will cost 1990 rubles.

The magnets on the back of the Moto Z aren't just for replacement covers. They carry Moto Mods, which will be sold separately. The idea has been successfully implemented: modules can be quickly changed without turning off the phone. Engineers from LG, when developing the G5, did not think of this before, by the way.

There are already 6 such modules:

  • JBL speaker with stereo sound and its own battery. It costs $ 80.
  • Hasselblad photomodule with 12 megapixel camera, optical stabilization and 10x zoom.
  • Two battery covers: 2200 mAh and 3000 mAh.
  • Insta Share Mini Projector for Large Projector Price: $ 300.
  • Car mount with fast charging function.

However, the modules are expensive. Battery for 4000 rubles? Thank you, I'd rather buy an external battery 5 times cheaper. Column for 5000? For the same money you can find portable acoustics several times more powerful. Only the Hasselblad photo module is of interest, but few will buy it for $ 250.

Another victim of the thin case was the headphone jack - there was no room for it (as in the case of Apple iPhone 7). Now the headphones are connected either via Bluetooth or via USB Type-C. Fortunately, the Moto Z comes with a 3.5mm adapter.

What is nice, this did not affect the sound quality. Clean, loud, but not as bass-heavy as the HTC 10. On par with other flagships: Huawei P9 Plus, LG G5 and Galaxy S7.

It's strange that there is no codec support Bluetooth aptX... It is needed for high quality sound when it comes to connecting headphones "over the air". That is, Motorola wants us to give up wires, but has forgotten to provide high sound quality.

But I was impressed by the external speaker. There is only one here, but it gives out a loud and clear sound. What's nice is that the speaker is not blocked during games and watching movies.

It's too early to remove the 3.5mm jack from smartphones. Even for the sake of thickness. It's good that the Moto Z comes with an adapter.

During a conversation, the interlocutor can be heard perfectly, and the interlocutors themselves also liked the sound. This is due to the four microphones scattered throughout the Moto Z. They help out great in a noisy subway and in strong winds.

The fingerprint scanner is built into an unsightly square under the screen. This is not a key, as it might seem at first glance, and cannot be pressed. There is a sensor, but it has only two functions: when pressed for a long time, the smartphone is locked, when touched in full-screen applications, the navigation bar is pulled out.

The scanner reads prints instantly. Quickly touched the square - and the smartphone is immediately ready for use. The Moto Z is just as fast as the leaders OnePLus 3 and Huawei P9 Plus.

The Moto Z has an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. For a 5.5-inch screen, this is more than enough. The image is clear, high-contrast. Black is perfect. The backlight brightness is high, but there is almost no headroom. That is, on a bright sunny day, the screen may be dull.

At the same time, if in the dark you twist the brightness to a minimum, the screen still remains merciless to the eyes: this is because the minimum level is not as low as we would like.

The screen is made using AMOLED technology and is energy efficient. The image is clear and contrasting, but with the brightness settings, not everything is as cool as we would like.

The weak point of Motorola flagships has always been the camera. However, the situation has changed here. Moto Z has installed a module with a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f1.8. Moreover, an optical stabilizer and laser autofocus have been added here.

During the day, the camera shoots perfectly: high detail, drawn sky, correct rendering of colors and shades. The automation works flawlessly. I liked the work of the automatic HDR. Even against the bright sun, the processor draws out dark areas, removes glare and does not lighten bright objects.

With the onset of darkness, the focus begins to be naughty. It "hits" past, then frantically tries to grab the light source. Exposure sacrifices noise reduction: there is little grain, but moving objects are blurred. Static ones remain clear thanks to stabilization.

The front 5MP camera has a flash. At night and indoors, she will help out selfie lovers. The capture angle of the picture is large, so if you try, you can put a large company in the frame.

The camera in Moto Z has caught up with the current flagships of other manufacturers in terms of quality. But in low light it is inferior to the Samsung Galaxy S7, Google Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus.

Motorola Moto Z is one of the most fast smartphones in the world. The novelty is powered by the proven Snapdragon 820 chip with a frequency of 2.15 GHz. The same processor is in the LG G5, HTC 10, OnePlus 3. According to the results of the Moto Z tests, it is in the top three.

In Geekbench 4, the smartphone scored a suspiciously low score. Moto Z earned 5200 points from foreign colleagues. Let's write off the lags of the test sample.

RAM 4 GB, physical - either 32 or 64 GB. For most users, this will be enough, but just in case there is a slot for memory cards. Then you can increase the volume by another 256 GB. But keep in mind: the flash drive is installed instead of one of the two SIM-cards.

In reality, the smartphone works very quickly. He doesn't care what to do - launch games, play 4K videos, or keep several applications in the background. Everything is so fluid that you can't help comparing the Moto Z to the Google Pixel.

The Pixel analogy also suggests itself when looking at the system. Motorola Moto Z is the only flagship that runs on pure Android. No heavy shells and a bunch of useless applications. Everything is neat and to the point. Yes, the Moto Z is not the first in the tests, but in terms of optimization it can compete with the devices of Google itself.

One of the most original and unique phones in recent years has become new model"Motorola" with a projector, speaker and camera, coupled with 10x optical zoom. Moto Z is the most unusual solution on the gadget market in recent years, both in appearance and in technical characteristics. All the nuances and uniqueness of the new smartphone-designer - in the review for "Motorola" with a projector.

Contents of delivery

Despite the fact that the package bundle of the smartphone for testing is very modest - only the gadget itself and Charger- For users, the new "Motorola" with a projector comes with a 3.5 mm adapter with USB Type-C, a special clip for removing the card tray and an additional panel.

Design

The new model of the smartphone was made in a very thin body, which makes it possible to draw an analogy with the Motorola V3 clamshell released in 2004. The company came up with an original solution, demonstrating a new Motorola with a projector, a pile of accessories and a modular design with a unique design.

Despite the small thickness, the design of the phone is very solid and monolithic. The smartphone passed the standard strength test without showing any creaks or backlash. However, you should be careful about a complex and graceful design: an unsuccessful fall can lead to sad consequences.

The body of the new "Motorola" with a projector is aluminum, made in three colors: black and gold, white and gold and black and silver.

The lower and upper parts of the rear panel are decorated with glass inserts, while the panel itself is trimmed with transverse stripes. Despite the fact that the aluminum panel is quite easily soiled, it is resistant to scratches.

The camera is located on the rear panel with a projector and protrudes from the body quite strongly due to the fact that a lens and a dual flash are located on a separate platform, as a result of which the phone lies unevenly on the table surface. However, the developers thought about this detail too: the presence of an additional back panel quickly eliminates it.

The elements of the contact pad are located at the bottom and allow you to connect additional modules to the smartphone.

The speaker, enclosed in a metal frame, is located at the top of the panel. A flash, sensors and a front camera are hidden on the side of it.

The fingerprint scanner is located under the screen, next to it are microphones and motion sensors. The latter are made in black and are not particularly noticeable on a black smartphone, but they stand out on a white model. During long-term use of "Motorola" with a projector, such a detail does not attract attention, however, when meeting, it looks unusual and resembles a funny face.

A tray for SIM-cards and memory cards is located at the top.

Moto Mods

Moto Mods is a well-known line of additional accessories for a smartphone. The simplest element of it is a decorative rear panel made of plastic. The set comes with a wooden cover, but if you wish, you can purchase panels from other materials. The cost of one copy is about $ 20, they are attached to the smartphone with magnets and protect the back surface from damage. The sloping shape of the lid improves the ergonomics of the smartphone and allows you to hide the protruding camera.

The cell phone "Motorola" with a projector is equipped with a stereo speaker, created in active cooperation with the world famous company JBL, thanks to which the smartphone turns into a full-fledged music center. An additional module with a projector allows you to view photos and videos in large size. Each of them is equipped with its own battery and USB ports Type-C so they don't drain the Moto Z's battery and can be charged separately from it.

The JBL speaker is connected via the connectors located on the rear panel. The speaker is equipped with a stand that allows you to conveniently place your smartphone and watch videos with high-quality sound. Power from the phone battery is activated after 10 hours of operation of the speaker from its own battery. The average cost of an audio module is $ 80.

Displaying images from a smartphone screen to any surface in a resolution of 854x480 pixels is carried out using a miniature Insta-Share projector. The module has a built-in 1100 mAh battery, which is enough for autonomous work within one hour. The cost of such a module is $ 300.

A Hasselblad photomodule is provided for a similar price, which allows you to turn a Motorola with a projector into a full-fledged camera with a 12-megapixel sensor, tenfold zoom and good optics. Equipped with addition of optical stabilization and xenon flash.

The cost of the 2200 mAh battery cover is $ 60. A similar panel with wireless charging will cost you $ 90.

Ergonomics

A distinctive feature of the new product from Motorola is the elegance of the profile: so thin smartphones today they are practically not produced - with a weight of 136 grams, the thickness of the case is 5 mm. At the same time, the phone is equipped with a 5.5-inch screen.

The screen lock key and separate volume buttons are located on the right side of the case. They are located high enough, so you won't be able to click on them without intercepting the smartphone. However, the phone screen is blocked by the scanner, so you don't need to reach for a separate key. Accidental actuation is completely excluded, the keys are easy to finger, softly pressed and pleasant to the touch, the response is intelligible and clear.

Display

The new product from Motorola is equipped with a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2560x1440, narrow frames and a density of 535 pixels per inch. Glass 4 is used as a protective element, curved at the edges, with a good anti-reflective effect and an oleophobic coating: fingers do not leave any marks. The screen sensitivity is excellent, a ten-point multitouch works.

The display delivers high quality images with bright, rich colors and excellent contrast. Depending on the lighting, the backlight level changes smoothly and accurately, so we can say that the sensor copes with its task.

Price

The main question of users - how much does a Motorola with a projector cost? Given the wide functionality and a large number of additional accessories, it will cost a rather large amount - about $ 700.

Eventually

Lenovo has turned the subsidiary into a testing ground for innovative technologies that are reflected in the Moto Z. The international manufacturer has equipped Motorola with the very best in its arsenal, adding a modular design. An original and unique idea with replaceable modules will cost the client a fairly large amount. Additional accessories fuel interest in Moto Z, and fans of non-standard gadgets will definitely appreciate it.

The advantages of the model:

  • Original Moto Mods.
  • High charging speed.
  • High-quality pictures.
